How to Take Care of Your Pet During Scorching Summers

 Chris Cole

If you live in an area that has summers where temperatures are practically impossible to bear, you're probably just sitting still throughout most of your days, trying not to move unless you have to. Otherwise, you will turn into a puddle of sweat.Well, you at least know that you can get ice cubes and lower your body heat just enough so that you can breathe – pets can't really refill their ice trays and do the same. This is why your pet needs a special kind of care during scorching summers and yes – you will need to move around a bit to provide them with what they need.

Make Sure That There's Enough Water

This goes for throughout the year, but you need to really mind your water refilling habits during summer. It is necessary to do it several times per day so that your pet can always have a full bowl of fresh water and it's a good idea to even leave several bowls, just in case. In order to maximize the chill effect, you could also put a couple of ice cubes in their water bowl, so that your pet can really enjoy a refreshing drink when they need it. Of course, you should make sure that the water containers are in the shade.

Provide Shade at All Times

However, considering that they don't really mind sleeping under direct sunlight during the most dangerous hours, you should control their behavior because they can have a sun stroke. So, you should let them enjoy some sun but make sure they have enough shade to hide under when it's too much. Also, don't forget to remind them to move after a certain period of sunbathing.

They Need to Cool Off as Well

The logical thing to do during summer heats is to go into water. You should train your pets to do exactly the same, and if you apply effective training methods, I'm sure they won't have a problem with water. Quite the contrary – most pets enjoy water a lot. Therefore, get a kids' swimming pool or a hose with a gentle filter and cool off with your pet.

Plan Your Exercise Carefully

During seriously hot summers, it is necessary that you change your walking and exercising habits. Naturally, you should plan your quality time with your pet around those unbearable hours. Take your dog out in the early morning and in the evening. This schedule will not only be beneficial for your pet, but for you as well. Also bear in mind pavements can get very hot at time during the summer and can burn Dogs feet.

Pets Like Icy Treats, Too

Instead of treating your pet with a delicious snack like you'd normally do, you should go a step further and give your dog a real summer treat. Considering the fact that you are probably stocked up with ice trays, you can repurpose one and, instead of filling it with water, place your pet's treats in them. You can even pour some water over so that treats turn into ice cubes and help your pet cool off while enjoying their yummy snack.

Mind the Hairdo

Their appearance obviously implies that they originally lived in a place that has a cold, harsh climate and it's just unnatural for them to bear that much heat. Therefore, be extra careful during the summer and make sure that you trim their hairs or take them to a professional regularly, so that they're not in danger of dehydration, for example.

Pay Attention to Alarming Signs

If you notice any sign of illness, go to your vet right away. So, if your pet has problems with fatigue, diarrhea, vomiting, heavy breathing or some kind of seizure, you need to react right away in order to prevent more serious conditions. If there's a need for intervention, your vet will also give you pointers on how to check up on your pet regularly, like checking their temperature for example, and give you the tools necessary to do so. In order to prolong the life of your pet, keep them safe and healthy, it is imperative that you're involved in every part of their day. I'm sure you wouldn't want anything bad to happen to them, which is why you should do your best to stick to these guidelines so that you're pet and you can have fun during summer in a way that isn't dangerous.
